Dear Telecom Team:
Welcome back from the holidays! 1993 is starting off at a fast past
(like last year)!
Remember to keep the sales success stories rolling in as we enter the
new year. Think of the last time you had an RFP and needed info on
success stories quickly. If you don't share your successes, there is not
a pool of successes to pull from and it makes it harder on all the
telecom teams. By the way the next dead line to submit your articles is
February 19th.

Telecom Australia SOE Success Paul Dennis/HP Sales
* Company Confidential *
************************************************************************
We have just received formal advise from Telecom Australia that HP has
been awarded full SOE status for our 800 series UNIX servers and
700 series workstations. We will share this status in a dual supplier
environment with Sun. The other contenders; NCR, Bull (IBM RS6000),
and Pyramid were notified of their failure to achieve SOE status.
This is the first time that the SOE has been defined for UNIX hardware,
previously HP has had interim status only and the process didn't have
clear agreement from the major Telecom user divisions. This new SOE
status has been awarded after extensive evaluation involving all
Divisions, including Telecom Network Products, Telecom Research Labs.,
Mobile Communications Services, Customers Divisions as well as ITG. It
is expected that that Telecom will adhere closely to the SOE and our
business opportunities will increase.
Thanks for to all who helped on this major SOE campaign - without your
help we wouldn't have made it. Best regards, Paul Dennis Telecom Account
Manager.

Sigal Project Success Story Carlos Janicas/Portugal
* Company Confidential *
************************************************************************
HP Portugal has won a deal with an Emerald 890-2 way SMP against an IBM
R6000 (2 x 970 system) for an ORACLE based assets and purchasing
management application. Telecom Portugal requirements were:
- UNIX operating system
- possibility to connect 170 simultaneous users with no more than 3
second response time on a pre-defined transaction.
The commitments we gave to Telecom Portugal regarding the performance
requirements together with the capability of the system to grow with the
application gave us a competitive advantage against our competition.
The size of the deal: 500k$
Sales Cycle: 3 months
Sales Team: Antonio P. Ferreira (Sales Manager)
Carlos Janicas (Account Manager)
Artur Silva (Sales Engineer)

Telespazio FT 1210 Success Story Fabio Fontana/ Italy
* Company Confidential *
************************************************************************
We've just closed on Dec 24th, 92 a "strategic Deal" with Telespazio.
Telespazio, whose objective is the design construction and management of
satellite communications systems and earth stations, was founded in
1961. As a member of the IRI-STET group it is owned in equal shares by
Stet, Italcable and RAI, the Italian Broadcasting Corporation. The
company employs a staff of about 1060 people, with a revenue of 265M$ in
1991 (+32%), a profit of 18M$ and an investment in R&D and Joint Venture
of about 68M$. The results achieved have consolidated the company's
strategy for development, which aims to diversify its business and to
participate in every type of activity involving the use of space, from
the more traditional telecom services to more inovative ones, from
satellite remote sensing and environmental data collection to support
service for orbiting satellites, from the design of complex space
systems to participation in the most highly advanced domestic, European
and Worldwide space programs.
The project, worth about 1.0 M$ and ??? M$ future, is split up into
three phases :
1/ 3 HP 9000/1210 Fault Tolerant System 700 K$ Net in December 1992
15 HP 9000/715 Workstations 250 K$ Net in February 1993
4 HP router (SR and FR) 50 K$ Net in April 1993
2/ Network Management with Openview Q4 1993
3/ Next generation HP 9000/xxxx
PA-RISC 7100 Fault Tolerant System Q2 1993
The sales cycle lasted about 3 months and the competition pushing very
hard was DEC and TANDEM with MIPS-Based Integrity Unix FT System.
The partner was DATAMAT S.P.A., an Italian Software house who developed
five years ago the application "Satellite Network Monitoring" called
CMCS on an independant, has given us a great contribution to reach the
deal.

************************************************************************
ED TEL is owned by the City of Edmonton, AB. They have 1100 employees
and handle a million plus access lines. Trouble ticket dispatch wanted
to reduce the number of craft, provide better management tools, automate
the dispatch function, reduce the number of terminals per desk and
minimize the amount of time on the phone with the crafts people
gathering trouble ticket information. Of all of the solutions available,
they liked CSC Intelicom / HP at Rochester Tel the best.
The two-year sales cycle netted HP $400k in systems, $50k PSO consulting
and a five-year maintenance contract. Systems sold were one 867, one
847, two 750s, 256 megs each, Switchover and mirrored discs.
HP won this business because of the close working relationship between
CSC Intelicom and HP's price, performance, scalability, reputation, high
availability, and integrity.
The competition included:
***IBM (incumbent)
***SUN (high-level)
***DG (ED TEL was a re-seller).
For more questions feel free to call Allan Jeffrey at telnet 930-3054.

PRISM Systems' netWORKS Off to a Fast Start Dan Sisson/TBMA
& Danny LeBlanc/HP Canada
* Company Confidential *
************************************************************************
netWORKS, an integrated network management platform for both wireline
and wireless from Prism Systems, running on the HP9000 series 700 and
800, is opening a lot of new customer doors for HP and starting to rack
up leveraged sales dollars as well. While the product just recently
passed 'Verification Office', Prism's term for market release, seven
deals have already been closed. On the wireline side, netWORKS has been
sold to Mercury Telecommunications (U.K.), Austria Telecom, and Curacao
Telecom (That's an island in the Caribbean). On the wireless side, Prism
closed British Columbia Cellular and Edtel Cellular. And for our new
utilities reps, Prism closed British Columbia Hydro and Thailand
E.G.A.T. (hydro). Total business - $2M. Not bad for a new application!
And the future for netWORKS looks even better, especially in Latin
America! Motorola Nortel, the alliance between Motorola and Northern
Telecom to market cellular switches in Latin America, is also marketing
netWORKS as the network management system. 1993 should be a great year
for Prism and HP with this exciting product.

Americas Telecom PSO Update <AM> Laurie Vasquez/PSO
* COMPANY CONFIDENTIAL *
************************************************************************
For FY93, the Professional Services Organization (PSO) has created
Industry Consulting Practices designed specifically to support the CSO
Industry Practices. The Telecom Consulting Practice in the PSO is lead
by Nick Voigt, the National Industry Consulting Practice Manager. As is
the case with Bob Stringer, Nick also shares management responsibilities
for the Media and Utility Industry areas. Nick is located in Atlanta,
Georgia, but his team of managers and consultants spans the United
States.
The charter of the newly formed PSO organization is "Providing Open
Solutions for Telecommunications". Business opportunity areas targeted
for the practice include Business Support Systems, Operations Support
Systems, Customer Service, Network Systems, Wireless Communication,
Integrated Telephony, and Telecom Systems Integration. We are already
using Open Systems technology in designing, developing, and implementing
applications in some of these focus areas at several of our major
accounts. The PSO Telecom group can provide assistance in the areas of
infrastructure development, rapid application development, and mainframe
alternative/downsizing activities, but the organization is not limited
to technical application design and implementation.
Other areas of expertise and focus for the new year include process re-
engineering (as in needs assessment and quality/process improvements) as
well as IS/IT Strategy planning. We are also extremely interested in
developing and expanding industry presence and recognition as
specialists in Telecom Systems Integration and Customer Service
activities. Our goal is to earn an ongoing strategic presence in our
target accounts.
With the PSO Telecom practice, we have focused our people in several
practice areas:
-- industry consultants who use industry knowledge for process
re-engineering, quality improvements, and service integration;
-- solution architects who apply advanced technology to solve
telecommunications business integration problems;
-- account consultants who customize solution to meet specific
client business needs; and a
-- Telecom Center of Expertise which provides a lab environment
for advanced technology solutions modeling.
Beyond the individuals in the Telecom PSO Practice, there are other PSO
specialists that can participate in and contribute to our sales success.
Nationally focused programs in Mainframe Alternative/Downsizing,
Information Integration (CCSY applications), Rapid Application
Development (CTG applications), Network Design, and System
Integration/Project Management can be used to complement the skill sets
and expertise in the the PSO Telecom Organization.
Because our goal is to provide you with the best and most timely
assistance possible, we are working on guidelines to help identify the
best contact to use for different accounts and sales situations. We are
also interested in hearing your feedback, issues, and concerns on how to
improve our services and working relationship with you. If you have any
comments to pass along, please send these to Nick Voigt in Atlanta; he
can be reached at Telnet 850-2700.
With your help, we are looking forward to a successful first year!

LATEST NEWS
1. The Telecom Business Marketing is organized and mostly staffed now.
The TBM staff works very closely with TNO. (See B de Neuville "Telecom
Business Marketing" article for the organization). They often are the
first contact in Europe for the Sales Force and Customers.
2. New names in TNO marketing are:
Olivier Aba Partner Relations and Contracts
Pascal Poczekajlo Technical & Support Specialist
Yves Durieux Product Mgr / SS7 and AIN
3. The Ericsson Hewlett-Packard Telecommunications joint venture was
announced on December 10th. This is an example showing we take the
telecommunications area seriously and that we often enter into a certain
level of partnership. In fact it is crutial for us to be able to have
several partnerships. Most of our important telecom customers (even
competitors to Ericsson) have taken the announcement really well.
4. HP internal TMN strategy to concentrate in agent side and mediation
devices and variations of them is getting positive feedback. Our
customers, who have studied this area longer confirm that this is the
most difficult part of TMN, and they appreciate the products we can
offer there.
5. TNO will ship an SCP platform to an American customer early next
year. Details of this, even the name of the customer, are confidential.
The reason is that even inside the customer itself there are different
views on their possible AIN vendors. If anything would leak it would be
very harmful for the future business.
6. TNO has signed a MOU about common AIN projects with a switch
manufacturer who mostly operates in the Asia Pasific area and is
actively going to the US market.
6. The Home Location Register (HLR) project to develop an HLR for GSM
for Italtel (Italian Switch Manufacturer) and their customers is
proceeding well. Besides the HLR itself, it will include also the AUC
(Authentication Center) and EIR (Equipment Identification Register). We
are negotiating with other switch manufacturers, both in Europe and in
the US. The US standard IS41 is part of the development program.
7. We have started the before mentioned AIN pilot with a European
operator and with a switch vendor to test the most advanced
possibilities in this area.
8. We have ongoing discussions with major switch vendors in the AIN
area. Companies like Alcatel, DSC, Fujitsu, Ericsson, GPT, Italtel, NEC,
Nokia, Northern Telecom, Philips and Siemens all have interest to work
with us in certain areas of AIN. TNO is able and willing to help you in
these sales projects. You can contact me to get things further in any of
the TNO areas especially with Telecom Equipment Providers.

ATM is Happening at HP! <WW> Christine Martino/IND
* Company Confidential *
************************************************************************
You can't pick up a trade paper or magazine these days without reading
about ATM - Asynchrouous Transfer Mode! ATM is an emerging, high speed
networking technology. It has taken the industry by storm and promises a
huge paradigm shift in the way networking is done. HP is taking a
leadership role in setting standards and implementing ATM products,
components and test equipment.
ATM is a technology based on cell relay. It switches packets, called
cells, which are of a fixed length of 53 bytes. Several attributes
differentiate ATM from the networking technologies that are prevalent
today:
* ATM is the first networking technology that can be used equally
well in the LAN, MAN and WAN.
* Unlike shared networking technologies, ATM allows full bandwidth to
every user.
* ATM's small cell size makes it a perfect candidate for transmitting
video traffic, along with voice and data.
* ATM standards specify several physical mediums as well as scalable
speeds of 51 Mpbs to 2.4 Gpbs and beyond.
HP is committed to providing superior networking components and products
for the emerging cell relay and broadband networks of the 1990's and
will follow ATM standards where they have been defined. HP has taken a
proactive role in defining standards and is an active member of the ATM
Forum.
Various HP divisions and organizations are currently working on
different aspects of ATM:
* High Speed Communication Components
Chip sets and fiber optic components which can be used to implement ATM
are already available from CMCD (Communications Components Division) and
OCD (Optical Components Division). Teams in both divisions are
continuing to investigate low cost, high speed ATM specific components.
* Test & Measurement
HP's Test & Measurement organization has an ATM Analyzer available, the
HP 75000 Series 90, along with a spectrum of general purpose equipment
suitable for broadband testing. They are currently exploring integrated
Broadband ISDN testing - allowing analysis of both LAN and WAN ATM
environments.
* Internetworking Devices
HP's Roseville Networks Division is investigating ATM router interfaces.
HP Labs Bristol is prototyping a low-end ATM hub.
* Computer Systems
HP's Information Networks Division and Grenoble Networks Division are
working on ATM adapter cards for HP's system and workstation platforms.
Prototype work is underway and specific product plans are being set for
adapter cards for both S/700 and S/800 platforms. A third party EISA
card for use in S/700 workstations will be available in March of this
year from FORE Systems.
* Research Activities
HP Labs in both Bristol and Palo Alto have teams involved in cell relay.
Work is being done on Gigabit Testbeds in the U.S. and Europe, Gigabit
LAN prototypes and multimedia networking prototypes.
HP offers a broad and balanced approach to cell relay and ATM
development. The activities of the various HP organizations working on
ATM are co- ordinated through the Cell Relay Program Team.
Further technical information on ATM can be found in the ATM Forum's
supplement in the October issue of Data Communications Magazine. Copies
of this supplement, as well as additional information on HP's ATM
activities is also available from Christine Martino, Cell Relay Product
Manager, Information Networks Division.

TP Monitors on HP-UX <WW> Suzanne Thomas/GSY
& Selling Against NCR * Company Confidential *
************************************************************************
Transaction processing monitors focus on bringing data integrity to open
OLTP environments by coordinating transactions between distributed,
heterogeneous systems. These products handle some of the same tasks that
traditional operating systems have managed such as scheduling of
resources and managing user requests. Their key benefits for customers
include performance enhancement and increased data integrity.
Today, HP has all of the industry leading transaction processing
monitors on our HP-UX platform. These include Encina from Transarc,
TopEnd from NCR, and Tuxedo from AT&T. TopEnd and Tuxedo are provided by
a third party, Independence Technologies.
HP's strategic transaction management technology is Encina from
Transarc. We will be releasing and supporting Encina on HP-UX in the
Spring of 1993. Encina rests on top of the Distributed Computing
Environment technology from OSF. It will also be the foundation for HP's
implementation of CICS on HP-UX in late 1993.
!!Warning about TopEnd on HP-UX!!
In several sales situations recently, including a few in the Telecom
industry, we have run into a clever sales strategy by NCR. They are
promoting TopEnd as a highly functional transaction processing
technology which is available on a wide variety of platforms. The
"hidden" story is that the TopEnd version which runs on HP-UX and other
non-NCR platforms does not have all of the functionality that is
available on NCR: specifically, the authentication services in TopEnd do
not work on HP-UX because HP-UX does not offer Kerberos on our
platforms. Kerberos is required for TopEnd authentication to work.
What does this mean in deals? NCR will heavily emphasize TopEnd in their
selling, particularly if their hardware seems to be weak relative to
HP's. The customer then "buys in" to the TopEnd concept thinking that
they can run this software on a variety of hardware platforms. The
reality is that TopEnd is ONLY FULLY FUNCTIONAL ON NCR. With several
major accounts, we have seen NCR hardware gain on HP simply because the
customers became so enamored with TopEnd.
Please do not publicize this widely to customers or channel partners. We
are actively working with Independence Technologies to solve the
technical issues associated with the authentification services in
TopEnd. In the meantime, you have several strong points you can use to
counter this strategy from NCR. First, when you see NCR going in with
TopEnd, go after them immediately before the customer gets sold on
TopEnd. You can go after TopEnd directly by showing that Encina is a
much more open approach:
- Encina rests on standards technology - OSF's DCE
- Encina has been endorsed by IBM, HP and Sun (as well as DEC)
- TopEnd does not have the open, distributed foundation and is not
truly open since it only functions completely on NCR platforms
If you have specific sales situations where this is an issue, please
contact Suzanne Thomas in GSY Marketing at 408-447-7475.

Middleware for EDI <EU> Pascal Boudalier
* Company confidential *
************************************************************************
The following is an small excerpt from an excellent article on
Middleware for EDI by Pascal Boudalier. For the complete 7 page version,
contact Pascal. - Editor
The full outline for Pascal's article is:
> What is EDI , and why is it important ?
> Why is EDI important to VAN (Value Added Network) ?
> What is not EDI ?
> Who are the players (customer, suppliers) ?
> What is the technology behind EDI?
> What can HP provide ?
> Who to call ?
What is EDI , and why is it important ?
--------------------------------------
EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) is the electronic transfer from
computer to computer of commercial or administrative transactions, using
an agreed standard. EDI is about exchanging business documents (ie
Purchase Order , Invoice) between trading partners.
Several trends are increasing the need for EDI. Trading is becoming more
and more international, due to the business being global and
corporations creating alliances and partnership. Pressures also exist to
decrease the cost of operation, while increasing the quality of service.
All these factors require an infrastructure which allows business
information to flow reliability and quickly between business partners.
EDI objective is to provide this "business data network" infrastructure.
Why is EDI important to VAN (Value Added Network) ?
---------------------------------------------------
Because it's added value on top of the network! Network operators see
EDI (and more generally application services like messaging, enhanced
fax) as a way to increase the value of their offering, and to take
advantage of the investment done in the network infrastructure. Services
like EDI allow these operators to come closer to their corporate
customers, in order to offer *customized* solutions/services
(customization is indeed very important in this market, and is also a
way not to compete on price only).
What is not EDI ?
-----------------
EDI is *not* a network technology only. EDI existed before network were
used (some people were doing EDI by sending electronic documents via
tapes). Using EDI on top of global networks like the one provided by
global Telcos allows obviously to easily reach a large number of
potential business partners. But it's only part of the story. EDI is
more a business issue than a technological one ; and it's a vertical
business issue; one has to understand how a given industry (ie retail ,
transport , etc ..) works in order to successfully implement EDI (ie to
*save* money with EDI). VANS and Telco need to provide this business
expertise when delivering packaged solutions/services to their
customers.
Who are the players (customer, suppliers) ?
-------------------------------------------
Global operators are active in the public EDI market. The big names
there are GEIS (General Electric), IBM, BT Tymnet, ATT ISTEL and
EasyLink. INS is also active in the UK (UK is the largest EDI market in
Europe, due to a early push of the UK government). Newcomers are also
appearing. Scitor (Value Added Network arm of SITA) and Infonet are also
offering services (SITA is the largest private network in the world ,
and is operated by the airline industry).
Typical prospects for EDI can be found in the following environments :
- Companies who handle a large volume of repetitive actions.
- Companies who operate on tight margins, and who face strong
competition regarding productivity improvements
- Companies who operate in a time sensitive environment
- Companies who need to differentiate from their competition
by improving the quality of service (ie by providing timely and
accurate information to their customers).
- Companies who have received the request to implement EDI
from one of their major trading partners.
What can HP provide ?
---------------------
HP can offer a very rich set of standard middleware products which are
suited for an EDI system. Several 3rd parties EDI translators are also
available on our platform and , depending on the case , either HP or
these 3rd parties can provide the business consulting which is needed to
fully implement EDI. A list of HP's middleware "building blocks" and of
the available 3rd parties follows:
I. HP Middleware
-----------------
1) The HP9000 offers a leading open hardware platform.
This is important since VANs will appreciate the scalability, security,
fault tolerance and stable operating system provided by RISC/HP-UX. The
HP9000 is a solid platform, committed to an open architecture and open
interfaces. When comparing with other platform vendors, it is also
important to note that HP is 1) a global company, which can support
operation worldwide, and 2) not a VAN (DEC and IBM are VANs).
2) HP/X400 offers a reliable and flexible X400 transport module.
3) HP/OpenMail offers a open system based message store
4) HP/X500 offers a full X500 implementation
5) HP/OpenView offers an open and flexible management platform
6) HP/CNM offers a Customer Network Management platform
II. 3rd parties
---------------
The HP's three EDI partners in Europe are MULTICOM, PERWILL, and LION.
(Much more info in full length article.)
Who to call ?
-------------
If you have an opportunity for messaging/EDI in the PTT/VAN area and you
need technical support , feel free to contact Pascal Boudalier in the HP
Grenoble (Telecom Network Center) at Tel +33 76 62 57 38, Fax +33 76 62
53 23, Voice mail +33 76 62 16 00 (box number = 5738). Another very good
contact is Richard HILL (HP Corporate Telecom in Geneva). Richard is one
of the European EDI gurus, is the author of a book on EDI/X400 and was
recently elected to the position of Western European EDIFACT Rapporter ,
the highest EDI position in Western Europe (this position is partly
funded by the European Community). This position will give HP a lot of
visibility in the EDI community.

Using '92 and ComForum Papers Douglas Dedo/CSY
************************************************************************
There were two papers presented at large Telecom trade shows this year
that were designed to help people understand how HP's new object-
oriented database technology, OpenODB, fits into the Telecommunications
world.
Over 50% of OpenODB's Beta program that started in 1991 involved telecom
companies. The lessons learned from these experiences were incorporated
into the trade show presentations.
The complete papers and associated slides can be obtained by sending a
message to the "CSY Hotline" with the Subject that correlates to the
paper title below:
Subject Paper Title (Telecom Conference)
-------- -----------------------------------------------------------
OUSING92 Open Object-oriented Databases: Tools For Telecom Systems
(Using '92)
OCOMFORM Object-oriented Databases for Rapid Application Development
(ComForum)
These papers can show HP's leadership in an area of information
management systems that is tailored to providing Telecom solutions.

SUN Update!
SUN is stepping up their worldwide emphasis on the telecom industry.
In December, 50 pre-sales SEs from around the world received telecom
training. Consulting/Integration is performed by another part of their
organization.
The training was 5 days and consisted of:
1 day at corporate --- strategy + selling to telcos info
2 days at Telestrategies training - a course on telecom
for non-engineers (our sales force & some consultants
have attended this training)
1 day getting their product update info.
The SE backgrounds were varied--some platform, some networking,... In
talking with some of them, the areas they most needed to develop
expertise in were: IBM environments and voice communications. (same as
what we identified as key in the capabilities analysis done in Asia-
Pacific of our PSO consultants).
There were SEs from: around the U.S, 3 from Japan, one from Australia
and one from Taiwan, and several from Europe (U.K., Germany, and
France). There were also some headquarters sales support/HAM type people
(in addition to doing pre-sales work/sales support they also
manage/orchestrate internal resources & issue resolution).
Telecom accounts have historically purchased lots of PC clients (They
were 20% of our HP PC business last year). Their vision of client server
computing is developing to incorporate workstations as clients more
prominently (a la the GTE and BellSouth customer service deals where HP
helped them develop their client server vision).
KEY MESSAGES:
Be on the lookout for SUN when selling/positioning HP solutions to win!
There is an urgency to staffing and training our consultants!
